Kant holds the concept of purposiveness to be merely heuristic; it is not constitutive of man’s activities. This concept is, so to speak, a fiction—necessary, perhaps, for the comprehending of man’s actions, but a fiction nevertheless. Parsons, on the other hand, is outspokenly opposed to fictional concepts—he is an “analytical realist.” To the extent that a theory is confirmed that theory is congruent with some aspects of reality. The propositions of a theory, when verified, then represent constitutive aspects of external or empirical reality. If the distinction between constitutive and heuristic concepts is consistent with Kant’s metaphysical dualism, what are we to make of the fact that Parsons opposes such a conceptual distinction for the deciphering of his metaphysics?
